Solo(uk) School of Motoring is a DSA ORDIT registered company
First of all thank you for your interest in becoming a driving instructor. With realistic earnings of £20,000 to £25,000 per year depending on the hours you wish to work this is a very rewarding career.
No previous teaching experience is required and you do not need any formal qualifications to become a driving instructor. You do need to have held a Full UK Driving Licence for a minimum of three and a half years before being able to apply. Any points on your licence do not necessarily exclude you, but they will be taken into consideration by the DSA before you are accepted. You will also need to provide a criminal records check to prove you are a fit and proper person.(this will be included in your starter pack which is provided by us. All being well this can take upto 6 to 8 weeks for your application to be accepted. No fees will be required by us until your application has been accepted.
Before you begin this process our DSA ORDIT inspected trainer will meet with you to answer any questions you may have and help you with the application process. There are no forms to sign and no obligation for you to proceed at this point. You will probably wish to think it over first.
The course
The course begins with a free driving assessment with our trainer. He will be able to assess your current driving style and give you some tips to improve your standard to that required to become a Driving Instructor.
The Driving Instructor Qualification is split into three exams, but it is important that we treat the whole process as one. This will all become clear as we start your course.
Part 1
We will provide you with all the training materials you need to study for this part of the test. The price of these is included in your fee. Our trainer will make regular visits to you to help with any problems and guide you through the training. You will get regular mock test exams either on paper or cd-rom to guage whether you are ready for the test. This part of the course requires a lot of home study so you will need to make time for yourself to be able to complete this section.
You are allowed to take the part one exam as many times as you need to pass.
Cost for this part: £650
Part 2
This stage is all about developing your driving ability. This takes the form of 16 hours in car training. Each session is 2 hours split into 8 sessions. You will be required to drive in a brisk businesslike manner on various types of roads. You will also need to perform all the manoeuvres that you will be teaching your learners. The exam is about assessing your ability to teach, not to drive. The examiner will be looking for the qualities in your drive that you will be teaching your learners.
You are only allowed three attempts at this part of the qualifying exam.
Cost for this part: £650
Part 3
This stage is 40 hours in car 1 to 1 training. You will be shown how to teach learners and fix any mistakes they make. You will receive a training file and a set of lesson plans and diagrams. You will also have regular mock tests to help you prepare for your final exam.
Again you are only allowed three attempts at this part of the qualifying process.
Cost for this part: £1200
Full cost of the Driving Instructor Training Course is £2500.
(some of the larger establishments charge in excess of £3000 on a 2 to 1 ratio. Also check that the trainers are ORDIT registered as you can then be sure you are going to receive the best quality training that has been approved by the DSA)
Additional Training
Additional training is available at a very reasonable cost of £25 per hour. Free support observation sessions are available on request.
Unhappy with your current training?
Let us offer you a free 2 hour assessment for your chance to join us at stage 2 or 3.
